Fine Blanking of Precision Metal Components

High-Precision Metal Forming for Demanding Applications

Sunstar Engineering’s fine blanking technology delivers precision metal components for braking, powertrain and drive applications where safety, durability and dimensional accuracy are non-negotiable. By combining high-tonnage presses, advanced tooling and post-machining, we support OEMs with reliable, repeatable production of complex parts in iron and stainless steel.

Sunstar Engineering Americas connects customers across the Americas to this global fine blanking capability, backed by decades of experience in motorcycle, automotive and industrial drive components.

Fine Blanking Technology

Fine blanking enables precision processing at a scale that is difficult to achieve with general press methods. It allows complex shapes to be produced by pressing alone, often eliminating secondary cutting and drilling operations and supporting mass production of tight-tolerance parts.

We operate fine blanking equipment including a 1,100-ton fine blanking press capable of die-cutting and forming iron and stainless-steel plate up to 10 mm thick, enabling robust solutions for high-load and safety-critical components.

Key technical characteristics:

  • Micron-scale precision: Fine blanking achieves dimensional control and edge quality that support high performance and consistent assembly.
  • High-thickness plate expertise: Fine blanking is integrated into a broader metalworking environment that also utilizes a 2,000-ton press and fiber laser machines for high-thickness plates and complex geometries.
  • Mass-production ready: The process is designed for stable, repeatable volume production of complex geometries with reduced need for downstream machining.

Materials & Thickness Range

Our fine blanking line supports a range of iron and stainless steels used in braking and powertrain systems:

  • Proven high-precision blanking performance with SUS304 and SUS403 stainless steels.
  • Fine blanking and forming of thick plates up to 10 mm, enabling robust backing plates, engine components and other structural parts.

This material capability complements Sunstar’s broader drive component portfolio, which covers motorcycle sprockets, disc rotors, automotive engine parts and brake parts.

In-House Mold Design, Manufacturing & Maintenance

Fine blanking performance depends heavily on tool design. Sunstar designs, manufactures and maintains fine blanking molds in-house, using proprietary know-how built through long-term collaboration with leading OEMs.

Benefits of in-house mold capability include:

  • Optimized edge and form quality through application-specific die design.
  • Faster response to design changes and ECNs because tooling adjustments are made internally.
  • Lifecycle control of molds to maintain consistent quality over long production runs.

Precision Machining & Finishing After Fine Blanking

Fine blanking is only part of the process. Sunstar integrates post-processing to deliver finished components ready for assembly:

  • Precision machining after fine blanking to add tapped holes and other functional features.
  • Double-head grinding and associated processes to achieve flatness on a micron scale, supporting stable braking performance and consistent clamping surfaces.

This integrated approach allows Sunstar to supply parts that meet both geometric and functional requirements, reducing the need for customers to manage multiple suppliers or additional finishing steps.

Typical Fine Blanked Applications

Sunstar manufactures and supplies fine blanked automotive parts such as:

  • Brake backing plates
  • Engine and powertrain components

These parts complement Sunstar’s broader portfolio of drive components, including:

  • Motorcycle disc rotors and sprockets
  • Automotive brake parts
  • Ring gears and other drivetrain elements for outboard motors and UTVs

Fine blanking is particularly suited for components that:

  • Require clean sheared edges for sealing or friction surfaces
  • Operate under repetitive load and vibration
  • Demand tight flatness and thickness tolerances for consistent braking or torque transfer

Integrated Metalworking & Development Support

Fine blanking at Sunstar is part of a wider metalworking platform that includes:

  • High-tonnage pressing
  • Fiber laser cutting for complex and high-mix/low-volume parts
  • Design & development support across chains, sprockets, disc rotors and brake systems

Combined with Sunstar’s global engineering network and its long history in drive components, this allows Sunstar Engineering Americas to support customers from concept through production with:

  • Feasibility and design feedback
  • Prototype and trial part support (often via laser cutting paths)
  • Production ramp-up and long-term volume supply
